This review will contain an overview of the plot, however I will not reveal any major spoilers. After this review you will still be able to read and enjoy the book at your own leisure.
Plot Overview: The Midnight Bookshop follows three individuals Jo, Adelaide, and Kye. Each individual is battling a challenge in life: Jo the lack of love from her parents, Adelaide her abusive marriage, and Kye the shady drug-dealing life his brother Leon forced him into. By chance (or perhaps maybe the fate of a magic bookshop), the three meet at a local food bank where each are drawn to a flier advertising the Midnight Bookshop.
Following the call, the three individuals meet each other at the bookshop. By the magic of the store, each are drawn to a book that the bookshop specifically curated for them to understand how to ‘rewrite their lives’ in a more positive way. At the end of reading their respective books, each performs a ‘life edit’ where they learn why their specific book chose them and how to move forward. Overall the book is a heartwarming tale about how a novel can alter your life, and each story holds a lesson we then carry on with ourselves.
Who will enjoy this book? If you love getting lost in a good book, I recommend giving The Midnight Bookshop a try. This novel is a light and easy read that reminds us why we love literature. The reader will appreciate the author’s sentiment that is outlined in the novel, that a good book not only offers an escape from reality but a story with anecdotes that will stay with us throughout our lives.
The Writing: The writing was overall well-developed, however there were a few minor grammatical errors including punctuation and capitalization. It was a relatively easy read with uncomplicated prose and would be a great read for young adults onward.
Overall: If you’re looking for a quick and easy read, and are an avid book reader, The Midnight Bookshop is for you!
